Six random food-related facts about me

Either it's NaBloPoMo, or my readers, like me, just don't know quite what to do with themselves now that the election is over.

Whatever the reason, I've been tagged not once, not twice, but three times on the same subject, or variant, of "six random facts about myself."

I almost didn't go for it, since I had already written a magnum opus "TEN random things about myself" tag post last November for La France Profonde.

But I couldn't refuse three blogosphere friends: Meredith from Poppy Fields,
Alisa and Bruce from Notre Vie Juteuse (whom I just had the immense pleasure of meeting in Rodez,) and the writer of Discover the French Riviera.

So here we go:

1. The only drinks I really like are coffee, water and wine. I used to like beer, but seem to be growing disenchanted with it. I also used to be addicted to afternoon tea, but got turned off of it when I drank it every afternoon during a one-month hospitalisation.

2. I absolutely cannot bear to eat in what the French call "cafettes" or cafeterias, for example Flunch. They seem to enjoy a certain popularity here, but seeing all that hot food floating around in serving vats makes my stomach turn. I'd honestly prefer to eat at "McDo's."

3. I hardly ever use recipes anymore.

4. I have never had a dinner party culinary disaster take place in my kitchen.

5. I've eaten here four times, but before it became a Michelin three-star restaurant.

6. I've made homemade aligot once, and I don't particularly recommend the gruelling experience.

As for who to tag, I thought just for fun I'd start with The Foodie Blogroll and go from there to find some nice, unfamiliar food blog(gers) :

10thirty

A Bon Vivant's Chow Chronicles

The Kitchen Canister

An Italian in the US

Cream Puffs in Venice

A Veggie Venture

I think I about broke my own personal link record with this one!

I have never heard of aligot before reading your list!

It's a local Aveyronnais specialty. I hadn't heard of it before we moved here, and I had already been living in France for five years!

I "deteste" Flunch, too. I'd rather go hungry or just eat a piece of baguette than eat there. Berck

Thanks for tagging me Betty!

Too bad Aligot is so difficult to make, because it's so good! Will have to go back to Lagiole to get my fix.
As for Flunch, I've never eaten in one yet.

This is the first time I read your blog and I enjoyed each posts on homepage :)

I guess I'll stay tuned ;)

Cheers!

dedene -- Yes, Laguiole is THE place to eat aligot! I really like the Hôtel Brouzes for a simple, reasonably priced aligot meal!

I've never been to Flunch but ended up in a Crescendo once. Definitely not good!

I love aligot - it was on the menu at the village fete this summer with duck sausage ~ yum. But make it, no thanks, my muscles don't need the hassle!! Love the blog :o)

I've never been in a Flunch! I did walk out of a Léon de Bruxelles in Paris once. Felt too much like the seafood version of MacDonalds. I told Ken that I didn't travel all the way from SF to Paris to eat in a place like that! He agreed.

Hi Betty

With you on no. 2 -- urgh! I can't understand how the French, normally so discerning about food, can flock to those places! Yes, they're cheap, but honestly I'd rather eat a sandwich.

Bras on the other hand ... I've eaten there once -- after the 3 stars! The food was wonderful, the place itself is amazing, but the atmosphere was too formal and hushed for us, and there is something rather obscene about spending that much on a single meal when there are homeless people in France, never mind the third world, who don't have enough to eat. So although we enjoyed it we wouldn't go back.

Yes, funny, Melissa -- especially since this blog is now defunct, so you can imagine I don't get many comments anymore either!
